The Great Pumpkin

We may be a little obsessed with fall...but who isn't?  Beautiful weather, the return of boots & cozy sweaters, colorful turning leaves, and pumpkin EVERYTHING!  Speaking of pumpkin, if you're looking for something fun to do this weekend try taking a little trip out to Homestead Farm in Poolesville, MD.

It's an adorable farm with both an orchard for apple picking, as well as fields where you can pick your own pumpkin in the fall.

And if you aren't up for actually picking anything they have a great little general store area where you can buy a variety of fresh vegetables and fruits already picked for you, as well as various other goodies.  It's a little bit of a drive, but not too far, and the scenery on the way is well worth it.

We recommend getting at least two pumpkins, one to carve into a jack-o-lantern and one to puree and use for this delicious, and SUPER healthy Pumpkin Smoothie recipe. It's sure to quell your craving for naughty Pumpkin Spice Lattes, Pumpkin Pie, or Pumpkin Cheesecake, but with none of the guilt! And of course you can always just use canned pumpkin if you want to simplify the process.

1/2 cup pureed or canned pumpkin
3/4 cup greek yogurt
1/4 cup almond milk (or rice/soy/cashew milk)
1/2 banana
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
2 tsp chia or flax seeds
nutmeg, cinnamon & ginger to taste

Pour all ingredients into a blender & blend till smooth.  You may need to add extra almond milk to thin mixture to your liking.  You can also add ice or vanilla ice cream for a colder/more indulgent smoothie (I happen to like cold drinks better).  This is great for breakfast or a post-workout refuel.

Wednesday Perk - Transitions

As we noted on Monday, fall is upon us.  Here in the DC area the mornings are crisp, but the afternoons can still get a little warm.  This means that transition pieces are a must, and lightweight, simple sweaters are the perfect item.  The best part about sweaters like this is that they can be worn for work, or with jeans for a nice weekend look.  These sweaters can also work triple duty, transitioning from summer into fall, throughout winter layered with a scarf or blazer, and to transition you from winter into spring.  We prefer simple, single color pieces so that they can be accessorized for any occasion.  Below are a few great, affordable options (especially given the endless sales at the retailers these days).  Also check out the accessories to spice up your sweater finds!

Monday Moodlifter

Mondays are rough, I think we can all agree.  And while we are excited for the season's shift into fall, letting go of summer can be hard to do.  So here are 5 things that are lifting our spirits this morning and getting us excited for cooler temperatures and colorful leaves, we hope they do the same for you.

Welcome!

Welcome to Skillets.Sneakers.Style! This started as an abstract idea, after lots of discussions about how we wished there was a place that combined the features we love about our favorite blogs, but that perhaps catered more realistically to our busy lifestyles.  We both love cooking, especially healthy meals, but our time in the evening is limited after a long day of work.  Similarly, we love exercise, particularly running, but finding a workable routine and maintaining motivation can be difficult.  Lastly, we love clothes and the idea of creating a beautiful and comfortable home.  However, our day jobs are more conservative environments and our budgets are limited.  So while we would love to wear that trendy new piece from Roberto Cavalli, chances are it is both inappropriate for our work places and is way beyond any budget we could dream of.  So finally, after a lot of talk we created Skillets.Sneakers.Style to be a place for us to write about three of our favorite things in a realistic way: cooking, running & fashion/design.  We have some great plans for this blog that we are both really excited to begin sharing with all of you.  Have a great weekend and we'll see you on Monday!

XOXO,
M & H

P.S. We're both Washingtonians, please enjoy these beautiful views
